Why is the keto diet good for you?

Whether you’re eating a keto diet because you want to or you have to, there are a ton of benefits to this diet regardless.

The keto diet is great for weight loss, obviously due to lower carb levels. The fewer carbs you eat, the less extra energy your body needs to find a place to store, AND the more fat your body needs to burn to make up for that missing extra energy. Win-win!

But besides weight loss, what is the purpose of the keto diet? There are plenty of health benefit besides better weight, such as:

  • better skin (processed and refined carbs may alter the gut balance, which can affect skin conditions)
  • possibly reduced cancer risk (the keto diet reduces blood sugar levels and keeps them more level, which research indicates may help decrease the risk of some cancers or may improve outcomes during treatment)
  • it’s a heart-healthy diet (although you’d think it’s not good due to higher fat consumption, it’s actually shown to reduce total cholesterol levels, among other markers, which decreases the risk of some cardiovascular diseases)
  • neurological protection (may reduce seizures in epilepsy patients, and may strengthen brain and nerve cells)
  • may offer improvement in some women’s reproductive issues, such as PMS or PCOS

What and how much should you eat a day on keto?

When eating a keto diet, you’re eating different macronutrient levels than the standard “eat 2,000 calories per day” diet, but calorie consumption can remain about the same.

Those recommended levels are about 70-80% of calories from fat, 5-10% from carbs, and the remaining 10-20% from protein. But keep in mind that this doesn’t mean you can go on a low-carb ice cream and cookies bender,.

You still need to make sure you’re eating HEALTHY fats. Since fat is most of what you’ll eat in a day, it’s important to give them some attention. Some great sources of keto-friendly healthy fats are:

  • avocados
  • nuts and nut butter
  • seeds (flax, hemp, chia, sunflower, etc)
  • olives, olive oil
  • eggs
  • fatty red meat
  • fatty fish (salmon, tuna, trout, etc)

As a special note, while “oil” comes to mind when people think of fats in foods, there are some to avoid, such as oils from corn, soybeans, margarine, peanut oil, etc.
