What is Frittata?

A frittata is a popular Italian omelet that consists of beaten eggs mixed with meats, vegetables, milk or cream, and cheeses. I love how filling and hearty this dish is and can be served hot or cold to any gathering. Air Fryer Frittata simplifies meal prep without sacrificing flavor and makes delicious leftovers when refrigerated!

What do I need to make an Air Fryer Frittata?

Easy Air Fryer Frittata Recipe - Golden, Fluffy and Crisp (2)

To make a perfectly fluffy air-fried frittata, you will need an air fryer. The machine that I use is Cuisinart Air Fryer Oven. You also need a dish to cook the frittata in. I’m using either a square 9-inch cake pan or a round 9-inch cake pan for this recipe. I line it with parchment paper for a hands down mess-free and easy clean-up experience. Parchment paper also makes it easy to lift up the frittata from a pan.

Note: You can use any oven-safe baking dish you have. As long as it fits in your air fryer. Aim for approx ¼ inch thick frittata once you pour the ingredients into your pan. It will rise up as it cooks. If you have a smaller pan and thicker frittata, you may have to cook longer to insure it cooks through.

Ingredients Needed

  • Eggs: I’m using 4 large eggs for this recipe.
  • Vegetables: I used sauteed mushrooms and onions. Added some bell peppers to the mix. And some fresh diced tomatoes.
  • A splash of milk: You can substitute with cream or heavy cream if you prefer.
  • Meats of your choice: I love diced ham. You can use the cooked bacon bits instead. Or make it meatless.
  • Cheese: I used half shredded Cheddar and half shredded Mozzarella.
  • Herbs: To really give your Frittata flavor, prepare your ingredients with a mixture of herbs, spices, garlic and onion. I love to add finely chopped fresh spinach.

How to Make Breakfast Frittata in the Air Fryer

Easy Air Fryer Frittata Recipe - Golden, Fluffy and Crisp (4)
  1. Pre-heat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Remember, most air fryers only need a couple of minutes to preheat.
  2. Crack the eggs into a bowl and whisk in the salt and pepper to taste. Add a splash of milk or cream.
  3. Then add your toppings, such as ham, cheese, chopped tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms and onions, herbs and spices.
  4. Whisk the mixture until fully combined and pour it into an oven-safe dish. I use a 9-inch baking pan, lined with parchment paper. See the pictures above.
  5. Cook for 6-7 minutes for a perfectly cooked fluffy frittata, until it is cooked through. 7-8 minutes until the frittata is firmer (medium) and 8-10 minutes for a well-done frittata. Be careful not to overcook Frittata. Monitor your beautiful creation ensuring it is cooked through but still remains moist and delicious!
  6. Once removed from the air fryer, let the frittata rest for 2 minutes before slicing and serving.
  7. Serve with a piece of toast, if desired.

How do you know when an air fryer frittata is done?

  • You'll know when the frittata is done; look at the outside of the dish - the top should have a glossy finish with some golden brown patches.
  • Insert a toothpick into the center of the dish. If the toothpick comes out clean, your frittata is all set! Though you'll still want to monitor closely since air fryers vary widely in temperature, looking for that clean toothpick should give you good insight as to when your frittata is complete.
  • Setting a timer according to the instructions outlined in this recipe card below. This may help avoid overcooking.

How to store frittata

  • Let it cool for about 10 minutes and store the leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Or keep it in the freezer where it will stay frozen for up to 4 months.
  • Reheat in the preheated to 375 degrees F air fryer for 2 minutes per side or until fully heated through. Or in the microwave for 40-50 seconds until warm.

Topping and Flavor Variations

I love finding unique topping variations to introduce new flavors to the dish. Try:

  • Crumbled bacon or cooked sausage, both of which add great flavor and offer a bit of crunchy texture.
  • For a more flavorful experience, you can add feta cheese, olives and fresh herbs like chives or tarragon.
  • If you’re looking for something sweeter, consider caramelized onions and apples or pears.
  • For creaminess and richness, replace classic potatoes with sweet potatoes or chopped squash.

Easy Breakfast Recipes to try

  • Air fryer Soft Boiled Eggs - Perfect for dipping toast soldiers.
  • Flourless Oatmeal Blueberry Muffins - healthy and filling.
  • Air Fryer Egg Cups - Healthy and Delish egg bites you can make in minutes.
  • 4-Ingredient Banana Blueberry Muffins.

Easy Air Fryer Frittata Recipe - Golden, Fluffy and Crisp (2024)

FAQs

How does the frittata get its fluffy texture? ›

Making a good frittata involves vigorously beating eggs. A non-negotiable, this allows air to be incorporated into the custard. Consequently, as the frittata cooks, this trapped air causes the eggs to puff up, giving the dish its iconic light and fluffy texture.

What makes frittata spongy? ›

Dairy, like milk or cream, is a crucial component of frittatas. This is the ingredient that gives frittatas their signature creamy, fluffy texture. Without this important addition, frittatas cook up flatter and a bit more dense. Follow this tip: After whisking the eggs together, be sure to whisk in some milk or cream.

How do you make a frittata not soggy? ›

If meat and vegetables figure into your frittata, cook them in the pan before you add your eggs—and I leave mine ever so slightly underdone. That way, they don't get soggy when they keep cooking in the oven (and I tend to like my vegetables with a little “bite” anyway, but it's a personal preference).

Can I fry an egg in an air fryer? ›

Place it in the fryer basket and preheat it for 5 minutes at 400°F (204 °C). Crack an egg to a small cup and slide the egg to the hot pan. Air fry at 350°F (177°C) for 3 minutes for a sunny side over easy fried egg. If you prefer a fried egg with medium egg yolk, add 1 more minute to the cooking time.

What kind of cheese is best for frittata? ›

Go for high moisture cheeses

According to Cheese Science, high moisture cheeses like mozzarella and smoked Gouda are great melting cheeses that give frittatas their desired texture. Meanwhile, a low moisture cheese like Parmesan won't melt in the oven, especially when it's surrounded by a mixture of eggs.

Should I add milk to my frittata? ›

Adding a bit of dairy, whether it's cream or thick yogurt, is essential for getting the moisture and creaminess of the frittata just right. For every dozen eggs, use a half cup of dairy. It can be cream, whole milk, sour cream, yogurt, crème fraîche, even cottage cheese.

When making a frittata which ingredient should be pre cooked prior to adding it to the egg mixture? ›

This also holds true for aromatics, like onions, and sturdy veggies, like raw potatoes. "They won't get much more tender once you add the beaten eggs," says Perry, "So cook them fully before combining everything." Don't be afraid of getting a little color on the vegetables: That's what makes them so delicious!

What kind of pan is best for frittata? ›

Use a cast-iron skillet.

The best choice for making frittatas, cast iron skillets can safely go from stovetop to oven, and they conduct heat well and evenly. Seasoning a cast-iron pan gives it a non-stick quality, so a well-seasoned skillet will result in the easiest slicing & serving.

What is the frittata formula? ›

The Frittata Formula

Frittatas are incredibly simple. For every six large eggs, you'll want to mix in ¼ cup of milk or cream, ¼ cup of cheese, and about 3 cups of meat or vegetables. The small amount of milk and cheese keeps the eggs soft and creamy and the meat and vegetables give you endless options.

When determining how many eggs to use in a frittata generally? ›

The egg to dairy ratio: If you are making a smaller frittata use 6 eggs and 1/4 cup of dairy, and if you are making a larger frittata use 12 eggs and 1/2 cup of dairy. You can use milk, sour cream, yogurt, milk kefir, or any other form of dairy you have on hand - just make sure it is full fat.

How do you know when to flip a frittata? ›

Here's an important tip: Don't flip your eggs until they're mostly cooked on the first side. This isn't an even split.

Can you put aluminum foil in air fryer? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

Can we put Aluminium foil in Airfryer? ›

Aluminum foil can be used in an air fryer, but it should only go in the basket. Acidic foods react with aluminum, so avoid using foil when air frying tomatoes, peppers, or citrus. Using parchment paper or a bare basket is better because it won't interfere with cooking.

Can you put tin foil in air fryer? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.

How is the fluffiness of a puffy omelet achieved? ›

Fast 'n' Fluffy Omelets

In a small skillet over medium heat, melt butter. In a medium-sized bowl, crack eggs then add cream of tartar. With the bowl at an angle, use a whisk to beat eggs for almost 2 minutes. This will get air into the eggs and the cream of tartar will make them fluffy.

What part of the egg makes things fluffy? ›

The main way to make cakes fluffy is to incorporate air. This can be done by beating the egg whites separately from the yolks and incorporating them carefully into the batter. Like that, you retain the air bubbles created while beating the egg whites and your cake is fluffier.

Why are my eggs fluffy? ›

A hot pan will lead to the rapid creation of steam within the egg mixture, adding fluffiness and giving it a soufflé-like quality, while eggs started in a cold pan will remain dense and creamy as they cook. I like my eggs somewhere in the middle: mostly creamy with a few lighter, fluffier curds interspersed.

What gives a higher volume and better texture to scrambled egg? ›

I personally like adding a splash of milk or cream directly to my eggs before I start cooking. I find that it makes them more tender—plus, it's a great way to add more volume to your scrambled eggs if you're maybe running low and need to feed a few.
