That’s exactly how I ended up with one ancestor claiming the name of Topham. Other names on this list such as Bumpass and Thornton probably originated from maiden surnames as well. Just as many fathers named their sons after themselves and called them junior, many mothers pass on on their own maiden names to their sons to preserve their family heritage, too.
