This means that it’s even easier to make and perfect for cooking with young tots.

The raising agent comes from baking soda and using half self-raising flour and half plain (all-purpose) making it really easy to bake.

Most Soda Bread Recipes I found needed buttermilk but this one doesn’t.

We’ve got an easy cheat to make your normal milk into buttermilk and it’s so simple.

Cheat’s Buttermilk Recipe

To make buttermilk from normal milk you will need

  • 280ml of full-fat milk
  • 1/2 tsp of lemon juice

Mix them together and you have cheat’s buttermilk to use in this recipe.

This is such a simple recipe. But there are some tips for making soda bread with kids.

Tip 1

Line your baking tray with some parchment or greaseproof paper this will prevent it from sticking.

Tip 2

If the mixture is too moist then you can add a little extra flour, or too try then add some more milk.

Tip 3

Kneading too much or too little will not affect this recipe as much as other breads so let your toddler have a go. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to develop their muscles that they will later need for writing.

Tip 4

Make a cross in the bread (this helps it cook) but it’s also a folk tale! The fairies lookout for the cross and protect the bread as it bakes.

Whilst you are waiting for it to cook and then cool down why don’t you sit down snuggle up with your little ones and enjoy one of the books from our Best St Patrick’s Day Books for Toddlers and Preschoolers selection.

Once cooked let the bread cool and then cover with Irish Butter and some homemade Jam for a perfect lunch for you and your toddler to share together on St Patrick’s Day.

Notes

The cross on the top of the bread is to help the air escape as it cooks, or as the folklore says it’s so that the fairies protect the bread as it bakes. I think I like the second reason better.
