Rutabaga In An AirFryer

Let’s clear something up firstshall we. I know there will be people reading this and being puzzled by what onearth rutabaga in an air fryer is.

That is because rutabaga goes bydifferent names and not everyone will have heard of rutabaga.

In Scotland it is called neepsand in England it is referred to as swede. It is NOT a turnip but isfrom the turnip family and tastes much better than turnips.

I eat it mostly as swede and carrot mash and it is a delicious side dish that most Brits have as part of their Christmas dinner.

I then use the leftover swede and carrot mash and make veggie balls with it in the air fryer.

As well as this I love to userutabaga or swede as I call it, in stews and casseroles, as air fryer rutabagafries and best of all as a roast potatoes alternative. Or here at Recipe Thiswe love Instant Pot Rutabagatoo.

Can You Air Fry Rutabaga?

The first question I get askedis can you air fry rutabaga, so let’s get that out of the way shall we?Many people think it can’t be air fried because it has a much harder texturecompared to air fryer fries.

But it just takes a little longerand you must make sure your rutabaga fries are sliced as French fries.

But beyond this, it is verysimilar to cooking traditional French fries in the air fryer.

Air Fryer RutabagaRecipes

The beauty of rutabaga is that youcan treat it as a potato alternative and cook it many ways in the air fryer.Take every favourite white potato air fryer recipe you have and convert it tothe rutabaga.

My favourite 3 air fryer potatorecipes that make excellent alternatives include:

  • Air Fryer Roast Potatoes
  • Air Fryer Garlic Potatoes With Bacon
  • Air Fryer Mashed Potato Cakes

Though I would advise against air fryer potato recipes that are too thick such as potato wedges or baked potatoes as it just doesn’t work as well.

Though, my favourite is a smaller version of air fryer roast potatoes. I call these my Syn Free Roasted Swede.

They are based around the Slimming World diet for my UK readers and this is a photo of them taken in the September of 2018:

To make these roasted swede potatoesinstead of our air fryer rutabaga is simple. You would cube the rutabagainstead of making it into fries. Then follow the recipe the same. You are justaltering the shape of the swede.

But most importantly, however you eat your rutabaga in the air fryer, or whether you call it rutabaga, swede or neeps, it is an air fryer recipe keeper.

What Ingredients& Gadgets Go Into Air Fryer Rutabaga?

Recipe This | Air Fryer Rutabaga Fries (5)

There are 3 main ingredients that go into an air fryer rutabaga:

I would recommend before making your air fryer rutabagathat you have a good air fryer that will consistently make them for you. Thereseems to be some very cheap brands of air fryers that my readers keepcomplaining are breaking on them.

I recommend the Philips air fryer XL because of the quality and the fact that it is an air fryer that lasts.

The ingredients that go into rutabaga in the air fryer are very simple. You just need a large rutabaga, extra virgin olive oil (we like this one) and some seasoning.

Our favourite seasoning is thyme along with salt and pepper. But you can mix and match depending on what you have in your pantry.

Rutabaga FriesFAQ

Rutabaga Fries Vs TurnipFries? Rutabaga all the way, I have notmade any secret of the fact that I don’t like turnip. Turnip is very blandcompared to rutabaga and rutabaga fries taste amazing.

Rutabaga Fries In The Actifry? You can use any type of air fryer when you make rutabaga fries. We made our rutabaga fries using the Philips Air Fryer XL, but you can use any. The Actifry can also be used to make rutabaga fries.

Are rutabaga fries good? Yes they are and they are also healthy too. Our rutabagafries in the air fryer are vegan, whole30 and paleo. You can also add yourfavourite seasonings to make spicy rutabaga fries or add rosemary for rutabagarosemary fries. Alternatively add parmesan for parmesan rutabaga fries.

Notes

Treat rutabaga fries like French fries. You chop them the same, you season them the same, you just cook them for longer. My favourite air fryer fries take JUST 15 minutes, compared to 20 minutes in this rutabaga air fryer fries recipe.

Have 2 knives to hand. One for peeling the rutabaga (veggie knife) and a knife for slicing the rutabaga as they are very heavy duty.

Because rutabaga is so tough compared to potatoes, do make sure your fries are of equal size. Otherwise you will have burnt rutabaga fries to just cooked rutabaga fries.

I cook rutabaga fries at 2 different temperatures. This is because you need to get the centre well cooked and the outside crispy. You can also use the break in between temperatures to shake your fries.
